Feinstein to play Severance benefit for AIDS housing
Cleveland-Entertainer
Michael Feinstein, widely recognized as a premier contemporary pop vocal stylist, will perform in concert on January 26 to benefit the AIDS Housing Council of Cleveland, a non-profit agency that provides housing and support to people living with HIV and AIDS.
The concert will take place at Severance Hall on January 26 at 8:00 p.m. and is sponsored by University Hospitals, Metro Hospital, Malrite Communications, and the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. Eighty-four cents of each dollar raised from ticket sales will directly benefit the services provided by the AIDS Housing Council.
Feinstein, who is openly gay, has earned a reputation as both a sharp musical scholar and a passionate performer. He is known for his graceful and moving interpretations of classic pop standards written by some of America's best loved com-

posers, including Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Feinstein's current release, Nice Work if You Can Get It, is a tribute to two of the singers' own musical inspirations: George and Ira Gershwin. Feinstein began his career in 1976 as Ira's personal assistant, which provided him with a wealth of knowledge and insight into the creative force behind timeless songs such as "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "Someone to Watch Over Me," both of which are included on the record.
Through his association with Gershwin, Feinstein also was given access to a number of previously unpublished songs, which are performed for the first time on Nice Work. The album is the companion piece to Feinstein's book of the same name, which was published in 1995.
Feinstein's most recent work adds a new
BLAKE LITTLE
volume to his musical catalogue, which includes the albums Live at the Algonquin, Isn't it Romantic, and the Grammy-nominated Songbook series.
Feinstein has performed thousands of shows, among them a sold-out Carnegie Hall debut and three appearances at the White House for as many presidents.
His television appearances have included guest shots on thirtysomething, Caroline in the City, Cybill and Coach, as well as nearly a dozen appearances on Larry King Live. He has also appeared in numerous made-fortelevision movies, including For Love Alone, for which he wrote and performed the title song.
Tickets for Feinstein's January 26 show are available through Ticketmaster, the Severance Hall box office, or the AIDS Housing Council. Prices range from $15 to $100.
